Dual-core iPhone 5 processor – what it means for gamers

We’ve already talked about how the iPhone 5′s dual-core processor will help productivity – now it’s time for the fun stuff. The A5 processor will allow for some astonishing gaming experiences. Read on for more details.

New high score

More than anyone else, Apple’s A5 processor benefits gamers. It’s all there in the blurb for the iPad 2, the first device to feature the dual-core chip.
According to Apple the A5 has twice the processing power of the A4 (which is found in the iPhone 4 and iPad) and a whopping nine times the graphical capabilities.

While the huge graphical advances are largely down to a superior on-board graphics chip, though, gamers will also benefit from the presence of a dual-core CPU. It’ll allow games to shift around more polygons, carrying out more of the calculations that go on behind the polished polygons of your average modern game simultaneously.

Then there are the bits of games that pertain to gameplay rather than graphics. Things like AI (artificial intelligence) and physics, which help make games more immersive and unpredictable, put a serious strain on a device’s processor. The iPhone 5′s dual-core CPU will be able to handle multiple calculations simultaneously, which will result in richer and more complex game worlds.

Console yourself

Put simply, the iPhone 5′s dual-core processor will allow for more on-screen characters rendered in greater detail and doing more interesting stuff. If that sounds like we’re approaching console-levels of accomplishment, you’re right.
Take for example Infinity Blade, a graphically rich action-RPG that put a number of console games to shame when it turned up on iPhone 4 and iPad.

With the release of the dual-core iPad 2, the game’s developers were able to push things even further. If such impressive results are impossible from a game built around a device with a single-core processor, imagine what a dedicated game based around the iPhone 5 and its A5 chip could achieve.

The only trouble is, that’s going to take a while, isn’t it? With the iPhone 5 not due out for months and the iPhone 4 continuing to be a popular choice (especially with the white model now available), it’ll take some time before developers are  familiar enough with the new handset, won’t it?
Not necessarily.

Reports have emerged this week that Apple is supplying iOS game developers with special iPhone 4 units running on the A5 dual-core chip.
This means that they’ll be up and running with the new hardware in time for the iPhone 5′s launch (whenever that may be).

Couple that with the success of the iPad 2, and you’re likely to see some graphically lush dual-core-optimised games surprisingly close to the iPhone 5′s release.
